Day 1 Lima or Cusco to Puerto Maldonado-Colorado – Manu Wildlife Center
Upon arrival on a commercial flight to the Puerto Maldonado airport, you will be met and taken in a van to the town of Santa Rosa. During the 2 and a half hour trip, you cross the Inambari River and then continue on a 15 minute boat trip to Puerto Carlos. From here, a 45-minute drive to Boca Colorado takes place, where you can enjoy a lunch and, finally, board a motor boat to sail for approximately 4 ½ hours along the Madre de Dios River to the Natural Reserve of the Manu
After settling in your room, you will make your first guided tour in the rainforest along some of the 30 kilometers of forest tracks that surround the lodge. You will have a very good chance to meet some of the dozens of species of monkeys that inhabit this pristine region of the Amazon, including the spider monkey and Emperor Tamarin.
After dinner, your ecological jungle guide will take you on a lovely night walk along the trails in search of nocturnal birds and jungle animals. (Box Lunch / C)
Day 2 Manu Wildlife Center: Macaw clay lick and tapirs, canopy tower.
Another early start (inevitable in wildlife expeditions), is followed by a short boat trip downstream. We take a 20 minute trail through palm plantations to a river cutting channel. You will witness the morning ritual of the red macaws, beat their wings to the tops of the trees, inspect the eroded cliffs of river clay, first making sure that the huge and dangerous black hawks do not loiter near. A supporting cast also appears on the scene, they are beautiful examples of blue-headed macaws and yellow-crowned parrots and Orange cheek.
Once the birds are gathered, a show like the best dramatic film begins in the clay lick. At first, the showy birds serve to be cautious, but later, prepare for debauchery. Almost all the macaws, parrots and parakeets form a colorful and noisy show on the banks of the bare benches, quarreling as they scrape the clay from the hard surface. (Keep in mind that the lick is more active from August to October and less during the months of May and June.).
After witnessing this entertaining show we return to the lodge for lunch, and then continue exploring and discovering the rainforest, its tradition and local flora. For this, we will walk through the network of trails that surround the lodge, until arriving at the end of the afternoon to the Dosel Tower, located at a height of 34 meters (112 feet). On that platform we will witness the frenetic activity of the forms of life in the rain forest, until before nightfall.
Then, we will walk along the path of colpas to the famous tapir lick.
This colpa is known as the most active in the entire Amazon, there we will find majestic animals of 272 kilograms (600 pounds), distant cousins of horses and rhinos, becoming the largest land mammals in Latin America. Research from the Wildlife Center of Manu, identified a total of 12 individual tapirs that come to this place to lick or eat the clay located under the roots of the trees.
The clay absorbs and neutralizes the toxins in the vegetarian diet of these gentle giants. You can observe this nocturnal ritual from an observation platform elevated 5 meters high (17 feet) above the forest floor. The platform is equipped with freshly made mattresses and pillows. Each mattress is covered by a spacious mosquito net where you can nap, if you will, until the arrival of the first tapir.
The elevated corridors of the platform are covered with a filter that absorbs the sound of the steps
DAY 3 Manu Wildlife Center: Walk to the Lake in Horseshoe and Natural Life
We leave early to board the catamaran that awaits us at the lodge, we will meet an ancient meander lake full of water lilies (Nuphar lutea) and sunken trunks. It is very likely that we will find the giant otter in the middle of the fishing expedition, or groups of monkeys rocking loudly on the top of the trees. Around the lake, the dream of an ornithologist will be fulfilled: woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, toucans and parakeets are just some of the birds that you will be able to observe.
Wading birds tread delicately over the spectacular leaves of nanofood, while Grebes swim delicately through calm water, Anhingas dry their wide black wings outdoors along the coast, while above, a perched Osprey perches on the branches of the trees to start the hunt.
Among the bushes near the waterline, a Hoatzin announces its presence with distinctive wheezing and strange grunts.
After lunch your guide will be available for you at the lodge to start free expeditions in search of other encounters with the fauna. Or you can take one of the many paths of the lodge in a personal and private expedition to meditate quietly with the spirits of the jungle …
During the night, from the end of the afternoon until after dinner, you will have the opportunity to participate in a canoe ride along the river bank (if the river level allows it) in search of alligators and others nocturnal animals. (D / A / C)

Breakfast is served on board in the morning, while you observe the activity of the fauna along the river. It will also pass indigenous settlements from the lowlands, as well as the gold mining mines and the gold washing along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. We will stop to the west mining town of Colorado to begin our trip by land to Puerto Carlos for 45 minutes, then we cross the Inambari River for the 15 minute boat trip to Santa Rosa.
